The mathematics behind one-rep max formulas

Testing a true 1RM to absolute failure places immense stress on tendons, ligaments, and the central nervous system. Submaximal 1RM prediction formulas allow you to accurately calculate maximal strength without the injury risk of grinding under a max lift.

Accuracy Rule of Thumb

Repetitions between 1 and 5 reps produce a 95% to 99% accuracy rate against true 1RM. Sets of 6 to 10 reps are reliable within 5% to 8%. Sets above 10 reps become influenced by muscular endurance and cardiovascular fatigue rather than pure maximal force.

How many reps should I perform to get an accurate 1RM estimate?+

Does 1RM differ between barbells, dumbbells, and machines?+

Yes. Dumbbell exercises require stabilizing each arm independently, meaning your combined dumbbell 1RM will typically be 15% to 20% lower than your barbell 1RM. Machines provide fixed movement tracks with pulley leverage, making machine 1RM non-transferable across different equipment manufacturers.
