Frequently asked questions
Workout Volume Calculator FAQ
Answers on calculating volume load, tracking weekly muscle group sets, and progressive overload.
What is workout volume load?+
Workout volume load is the total mechanical tonnage lifted in a workout session, calculated by multiplying sets × reps × weight for each individual exercise and summing the totals.
Is higher workout volume always better?+
No. While volume drives hypertrophy, excessive volume exceeding your Maximum Recoverable Volume (MRV) creates systemic overtraining, elevated cortisol, connective tissue strain, and reduced performance. Optimal progress occurs in the Maximum Adaptive Volume (MAV) window of 12 to 20 weekly sets per muscle group.
How should I calculate bodyweight exercises like pull-ups and dips?+
For bodyweight exercises, you can enter your bodyweight as the load (or bodyweight plus added dip-belt weight) to reflect total work done, or enter only the added external resistance if your body weight remains constant.
Do warm-up sets count toward my total workout volume?+
In hypertrophy science, light warm-up sets (RPE < 6) are generally excluded from volume load calculations because they do not provide sufficient mechanical tension to stimulate myofibrillar adaptation.
How does volume differ between compound and isolation exercises?+
A compound exercise like the Barbell Bench Press stimulates the pectorals (primary mover) and triceps/anterior deltoids (secondary movers). Many coaches count compound sets as 1 direct set for primary muscles and 0.5 sets for secondary synergists.
Can I use this calculator to plan a full weekly training split?+
Yes! Calculate the volume for each workout day, and ensure your weekly distribution matches your recovery ability. You can also build and structure complete sessions in our free Workout Routine Builder.
What is the best way to compare volume across different exercises?+
Compare like-with-like: track Barbell Back Squat volume against previous Squat sessions rather than comparing Leg Press volume directly to Squats, due to differences in machine mechanical advantages.
Is this workout volume calculator free to use?+
Yes, 100% free with no account or sign-up needed. You can add as many exercise rows as necessary and switch between kilograms and pounds instantly.
