BEST Putting Drills that will LOWER Your Score || 3 DrillsCoaching notes
A random practice game designed to test speed control and course management under pressure. The golfer selects three different holes at random on the practice green and attempts to lag putts from distance so they finish within a putter length (or club length) of the hole in a row.
Before you start
- Choose a target number in a row (e.g., 3 successful putts).
- Pick different holes at random around the putting green to confuse yourself and vary green speeds (moving between slow and fast putts).
Movement sequence
- Select a random hole (such as an uphill 30-footer).
- Execute the lag putt focusing solely on speed control and letting the putter do the work.
- Verify that the ball finishes within a club length (putter length) of the hole.
- Move to a completely different hole and repeat the process sequentially until the target number of successful putts in a row is achieved.
Key points
- Putting speed is dialed in such that even missed putts finish inside a 6-foot wide window (3 feet past or around the hole).
- Successfully completing the sequence across random holes without breaking concentration.
Common mistakes
Obsessing over making long putts instead of prioritizing lag distance control. Practicing from the exact same spot repeatedly instead of randomizing distances and breaks.
Practice notes
College golf coaches frequently emphasize that young players need better speed control. Visualizing the hole as 6 feet wide (3 feet on each side) provides immense mental comfort for converting lag putts into tap-in pars.
