Weighted Bag Swing-to-Upward Release Throw Drill / Kinetic Chain Pronation
4 min 42 secIncluded in this routine
The Most Fundamental Tennis Serve DrillsCoaching notes
Combines the continuous swinging momentum with a dynamic upward release of the weighted bag over the net, developing the kinetic chain acceleration and upward release angle required for a tennis serve.
Before you start
- Set up with the weighted grocery bag (half-kilo weight of tennis balls) held on two fingers.
- Position sideways facing away from the target net.
Movement sequence
- Perform the continuous number-8 swing rhythm with the weighted bag to build up momentum and loosen the arm.
- Accelerate the arm through the swing loops by timing the shoulder turn before the weight hits the bottom drop phase.
- Release and throw the weighted bag upwards over the net at roughly a 45-degree angle.
Key points
- Releasing the bag upwards at a 45-degree angle rather than hitting downward.
- Elbow correctly positioned behind the body during the backswing phase to avoid hitting the head.
Common mistakes
Throwing the bag downward because players are overly accustomed to hitting down on groundstrokes. Inadequate coiling and failing to bring the elbow behind the body, causing subconscious avoidance movements to prevent hitting oneself in the head. Timing errors where the player waits until the weight reaches the absolute bottom before turning.
Practice notes
Always start serve sessions with swinging and throwing exercises before moving to technical details. Young players typically take 3 to 6 months of regular practice on these fundamental throwing and swinging drills to master arm acceleration.
