The Most Fundamental Tennis Serve DrillsCoaching notes
Teaches effortless arm swing mechanics and relaxed grip pressure by swinging a homemade weighted grocery bag containing 8-9 tennis balls in a continuous number-8 loop pattern.
Before you start
- Place 8 to 9 tennis balls (or a ~0.5 kg / 1 lb light medicine ball) inside a grocery bag and wrap them inside a second grocery bag to create a half-kilo weight.
- Hold the bag handles with just two fingers to prevent tensing up the arm.
Movement sequence
- Face sideways relative to the net.
- Swing the weighted bag continuously in a number-8 loop pattern (incorporating the half-circles and the loop behind the body).
- Maintain a loose, dangling arm and establish a smooth rhythmic flow without stopping.
Key points
- Bag dangles freely from two fingers with zero muscular tension or gripping tightness.
- Continuous number-8 loop path is maintained smoothly behind the head and body.
Common mistakes
Grabbing tools or handles too tightly, causing immediate arm tension and loss of feel. Failing to turn the body enough so that the elbow stays in front rather than coming behind. Turning the head and gaze too far to the side instead of looking forward.
Practice notes
Takes players about a minute or two to learn the continuous loop movement in their mental image. Helps players visualize the internal loops and momentum rather than relying on stiff step-by-step technical instructions.
