Tennis Overhead Smash Drills And Net Play LessonCoaching notes
The first drill in the progression is an introductory warm-up where players hit easy volleys and overheads to loosen up, get warmed up, and establish proper technical rhythm.
Before you start
- Stand near the service line / net area.
- Get feet in gear and moving early.
- Hold a Continental grip for both volleys and overheads.
Movement sequence
- Begin by hitting easy, controlled volleys to get loose.
- Transition into hitting a few easy overheads to build rhythm.
- Focus intensely on key technique points during the warm-up rally.
Key points
- On volleys: Keep the wrist fixed with a little shoulder swing.
- On overheads: Move the feet early and swing out ('go for the home run').
Common mistakes
Reacting slowly because lob balls travel slower, leading to last-second scrambling. Babying overheads or hitting tentatively instead of swinging out.
Practice notes
Always focus on one or two specific technique points during the drill. Serves as the foundation and first step of the net play drill progression.
