Perfect Volleys in 3 Steps - Perfect Tennis (Episode 9)Coaching notes
Step 3 covers advanced net footwork. Whether chasing wide volleys or closing down the net to pressure the opponent, the first step on either side must always be taken with the outside/opposite leg in a precise two-step pattern.
Before you start
- Start in the low, wide split-step ready position with the continental grip.
- Anticipate ball trajectory to identify whether to cover a wide volley or close down the distance.
Movement sequence
- Execute the split-step as the opponent hits.
- On a forehand, step out first with the outside (right) leg, then follow through by stepping forward or across with the inside (left) leg (Right-Left pattern).
- On a backhand, step out first with the outside (left) leg, then follow through with the inside (right) leg (Left-Right pattern).
- Feel yourself stepping through the volley during contact to provide full body support and stability.
Key points
- First step is strictly with the outside leg (Right leg for forehand, Left leg for backhand).
- Two-step footwork pattern executed cleanly (Split -> Outside leg -> Inside leg).
- Body weight transfers forward through the shot, utilizing the whole body to support the racket head.
Common mistakes
Crossing over immediately with the inside leg from the ready position, which severely limits lateral reach and coverage distance. Failing to step through the ball, leading to an unstable upper-body-only volley. Slacking on the power of the final step.
Practice notes
Drill the two-step pattern (Split, Right-Left for forehand; Split, Left-Right for backhand) repeatedly to build muscle memory. Emphasize aggressive and powerful execution on the second step to guarantee stability and strength at contact.
