Tennis Overhead Smash Drills And Net Play LessonCoaching notes
An intense footwork and conditioning drill where the player executes an overhead, runs forward to touch the net, and then rapidly retreats backward to hit the next overhead.
Before you start
- Position near the net area ready for an overhead.
- Maintain active, moving feet.
Movement sequence
- Hit the overhead shot.
- Immediately run forward up to the net and physically touch it.
- Retreat backward quickly using proper footwork to get in position for the next overhead.
Key points
- Footwork must be fast and continuous during the forward and backward transitions.
- Ensure full backward movement so you are not jammed for the overhead.
Common mistakes
Failing to touch the net after the overhead. Being slow to retreat, resulting in a defensive or late overhead shot.
Practice notes
Excellent workout that significantly improves net footwork and stamina. Builds the explosive transition from forward net play back to defensive overheads.
