Tight Pressure and Contact on Back-to-Goal Reception

When an opponent checks toward the ball with their back to you and your goal, time your arrival so you and the ball reach the attacker simultaneously, getting tight and initiating clean contact to force them backward and prevent them from turning. 0-34s consists of channel introduction and topic overview. This is a tactical defending technical drill; rep count of 10 is an application recommended training target.

Key points

  • Time your arrival so you arrive at the attacker's back at the exact moment the ball arrives
  • Initiate a clean physical bump just as they take their first touch to knock them slightly off balance
  • Keep your center of gravity low and do not overcommit before the ball is controlled

Common mistakes

Arriving a step too early (allowing the attacker to spin into the space behind) or a step too late (flying in recklessly so a single touch takes them past you).
