Three Drills to Improve Putting | Titleist TipsCoaching notes
An outcome-based skill testing drill using a box configuration of tees placed behind the hole to learn how to precisely match putting line and speed.
Before you start
- Create a box behind the hole using sets of tees on a breaking putt (such as a right-to-left putt).
- Set up the first two sets of tees to catch putts that are short and miss low, and the last sets of tees to catch putts that go past and miss high.
Movement sequence
- Putt from approximately 10 feet away trying to make three balls in a row into the hole.
- If a putt misses, ensure it finishes inside the designated tee box behind the hole.
- Analyze the miss outcome to adjust your line and speed for subsequent putts.
Key points
- If a ball fails to reach the first two sets of tees, it missed low, indicating you need to play more break.
- If a ball goes past the last sets of tees, it missed high, indicating you played too much break.
- Successfully matching speed ensures your putts settle in the box or the hole.
Common mistakes
Missing the correct speed, which prevents the ball from holding the proper line. Failing to reach the first set of tees due to insufficient pace.
Practice notes
You learn directly from each outcome: the box teaches you to match line and speed, the sticks provide motion, and the tutor confirms your fundamentals.
