Basketball Decision Making Drills

Coaching notes

Live ball reaction drill where the player reads the trainer's non-verbal body language cues (such as opening hips or showing chest) from a stationary position to execute a straight-line drive or change of direction.

Before you start

  • Player faces the trainer in a live-ball stance with an active, engaged off-hand (palm down, hips dropped).
  • Trainer acts as the defender, giving non-verbal body language cues.

Movement sequence

  1. Read the trainer's body language: if the trainer turns to open up, attack the hip with a straight-line drive.
  2. If the trainer shows their chest, execute a change of direction move away from the pressure.
  3. Engage the active off-hand shield when making the move past the defender.

Key points

  • Read body language cues (open hip vs. seeing the chest).
  • Active off-hand locked in with palm down and hips dropped.
  • Correct execution of straight-line drive or change of direction based on the cue.

Common mistakes

Fighting the defensive read instead of inviting and reacting to the cue. Failing to raise the active off-hand shield when executing the attack move.

Practice notes

Emphasizes making quick-strike decisions under pressure by reading non-verbal cues rather than waiting for vocal commands.
