Pre-Set Racket Lag Position & Release Drill

Start with the racket pre-set in the lag position where the butt cap points forward down the court. Self-drop the ball, pull through the slot, and release the racket into contact, finishing across the chest or over the opposite shoulder in both open and neutral stances.

Key points

  • Pre-set the racket head behind with the butt cap pointing forward toward the target rather than forcing wrist lag at high speed
  • Load the rear leg and transfer weight forward into contact
  • Accelerate through the ball and finish across the opposite shoulder or chest with an aggressive windshield wiper roll
  • Practice with closed racket face angle to train heavy topspin roll

Common mistakes

Artificially forcing extreme wrist flexion or hyperextension during a full swing, risking wrist or elbow injury.
