Basketball Decision Making DrillsCoaching notes
Dynamic, high-intensity decision-making drill where the player floats along the three-point line following the trainer, passes the ball back, reads a live defensive cue, and attacks the basket under a time-score constraint.
Before you start
- Player and trainer bounce/float together along the three-point line.
- Set a time limit (e.g., 30 seconds) to create game-like pressure and urgency.
Movement sequence
- Float and bounce along the three-point line following the trainer's movement.
- Pass the basketball to the trainer and immediately read the trainer's defensive cue (hip open or chest shown).
- Execute the appropriate attack (straight-line drive or change of direction) using an active off-hand and finish at the basket.
Key points
- Continuous movement and bouncing along the perimeter without catching a breather.
- Immediate reading of the defensive cue upon receiving the pass back.
- Active off-hand engagement and sharp execution under time pressure.
Common mistakes
Hesitating or being apprehensive when reading the cue and making the attack move. Slowing down the pace or failing to maintain game-speed intensity.
Practice notes
Designed to induce physical and mental exhaustion in practice so players develop calm composure and instinctual quick-strike reactions during actual games.
