Tennis Overhead Smash Drills And Net Play Lesson

Coaching notes

A high-intensity simulation of a real match situation where the player alternates between a volley and an overhead in rapid succession.

Before you start

  • Assume a balanced net position with paddle/racquet up and ready.
  • Prepare for quick direction changes and rapid shot sequencing.

Movement sequence

  1. Execute a solid volley at the net.
  2. Immediately react and transition backward for an overhead smash.
  3. Return forward to execute another volley, continuing the combination pattern.

Key points

  • Maintain a fixed wrist and small shoulder swing on the volleys.
  • Move the feet quickly and commit fully to swinging out on the overheads.

Common mistakes

Letting the wrist break during volleys. Hesitating or holding back on the overhead instead of going for the winner.

Practice notes

Closest drill to a real match-play scenario. Regular practice of this drill helps you win two out of three points at the net due to solid volleys and overheads.
