Masking Tape Low-Point Control Line Drill

Place a straight strip of painters/masking tape across the hitting mat directly behind the ball. Strike wedge or iron shots aiming to graze only the leading edge of the tape and have the bottom of the swing arc and mat impact occur cleanly in front of the line.

Key points

  • Place a strip of masking tape perpendicular to the target line on the mat
  • Set the golf ball directly in front of the leading edge of the tape
  • Strike down and through so the club makes contact with the ball first and the mat divot begins after the tape line
  • Immediate tactile and visual feedback: a chunk or fat strike tears or dislodges the tape

Common mistakes

Hitting behind the line and tearing the tape off the mat (fat/chunk), or lifting up and picking the ball cleanly with zero turf contact (thin).
