Isolated Non-Dominant Hand Progression / Left Hand Forehand

2 min 13 sec

Coaching notes

Focuses on the non-dominant top hand (left hand) as the primary driving force for generating topspin, establishing a 60-40 role ratio where the top hand leads and brushes the back of the ball.

Before you start

  • Remove the dominant hand (right hand) from the racket handle.
  • Adopt an open stance to engage the left leg as the main driving force on the left side of the body.

Movement sequence

  1. Hit shots using solely the non-dominant top hand to practice creating topspin.
  2. Progress by alternating hits: one shot with the top hand (topspin), one with the bottom hand (extended flat shot), and one with both hands.

Key points

  • Top hand takes the lead and brushes up the back of the ball.
  • Left side of the body acts as the main driving force out of an open stance.

Common mistakes

Allowing the dominant bottom hand to take over and dominate the shot instead of letting the top hand drive the topspin.

Practice notes

This progression serves as the perfect drill to feel exactly which hand is controlling each phase of the shot.
