Wrestling Techniques For MMA: Takedown Drills | Phil DaruCoaching notes
An offensive wrestling drill combining a one-two striking entry into a head-inside single leg takedown, sitting the opponent down, and transitioning to a double leg when they defend with their grounded foot.
Before you start
- Assume a standard MMA striking stance facing your training partner.
- Establish a comfortable range to initiate a simple one-two striking combination.
Movement sequence
- Throw a basic one-two striking combination to distract or close distance.
- Level change and enter on a head-inside single leg takedown.
- Attempt to sit the opponent down to their butt by driving into them.
- Recognize the opponent's defense (defending with their grounded foot preventing the initial sit-down).
- Pop your head to the outside and drive across to your double leg as their foot moves and creates an angle.
Key points
- Keep proper posture and level change effectively on the entry.
- Ensure consistent pressure when trying to sit the opponent down.
- Quickly pop the head to the outside and cut across the body when the opponent steps to defend.
Common mistakes
Sticking with the single leg when the opponent has firmly blocked the leg on the ground instead of transitioning. Failing to create a proper angle when cutting across to the double leg.
Practice notes
Once you enter on the single leg with one leg up, the only way the opponent can defend is with the leg on the ground. Sitting them down forces them to move that foot, creating the opening and angle to cut across and drive the other direction.
