Three Drills to Improve Putting | Titleist TipsCoaching notes
This foundational motion drill uses two alignment sticks placed under the armpits to ensure the fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders all move in concert and in the correct ratio during the putting stroke.
Before you start
- Take two alignment sticks and place them nicely and tight under both armpits.
- Establish a proper hip hinge and get into your putting posture.
Movement sequence
- Grab your putting grip where the alignment sticks cross in front of you.
- Make putting strokes while keeping the alignment sticks locked under your armpits to monitor your stroke path and body connection.
Key points
- Ensure fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders are moving together in concert at the same ratio.
- Pay attention to your unique biological feel or key (e.g., left shoulder moving up as hands go through).
Common mistakes
Practicing unstructured putts without a sense of foundational motion, which grooves bad stroke habits.
Practice notes
Everyone will feel something slightly different based on their anatomy (elbow, shoulder, or wrist), which serves as your personalized swing key.
