Drop-Off, Directional Forcing and Delay (Angle of Approach)

When unable to close down before the attacker turns and faces forward, drop off to give cushion, shape your body into a side-on jockeying posture, and deliberately force the attacker toward their weaker side or wide toward the touchline away from the center of the pitch. Ensure stance is angled at 45 degrees so you can accelerate backward or sideways immediately.

Key points

  • Immediately accept the loss of tight pressure and drop off into a staggered, side-on stance
  • Angle your hips to dictate the attacker's path, typically forcing them wide toward the touchline
  • Take into account the attacker's dominant foot and the positioning of your defensive cover

Common mistakes

Continuing to dive or sprint directly at a facing attacker, making it effortless for them to blow past you with pace.
