Drill 2: Drop & Slot / Heel-to-Toe Weight Transfer

2 min 36 sec

Coaching notes

Focuses on dynamic weight transfer from heel to toe on the back foot as the shot is being hit, rather than committing body weight too early before contact.

Before you start

  • Start with body weight primarily loaded on the back (left) foot.
  • Place the front (right) foot forward with the heel touching the ground.
  • Maintain the high racket head takeback supported by the left hand.

Movement sequence

  1. Coach drop-feeds the ball as the player initiates the forward swing.
  2. Player executes a heel-to-toe weight transfer on the back foot while simultaneously driving forward into the shot.
  3. Player finishes with weight fully shifted onto the front foot and the back foot up on the toe.

Key points

  • Weight transfer occurs precisely during contact/swing initiation, not before the shot.
  • Transition goes smoothly from the heel of the back foot to the toe.
  • Front leg can extend during the swing for an even more powerful lift using the legs.

Common mistakes

Stepping forward and committing body weight before hitting the shot, leaving the player with nowhere to go and losing power. Dragging the back foot incorrectly without proper weight release.

Practice notes

This heel-to-toe transfer makes the stroke feel more relaxed and loose while producing easy power. Combining leg extension with weight transfer adds upward lift and stability.
