How to Defend in Soccer: 3 Drills to Be a Better DefenderCoaching notes
Expands individual defending into small-group 2v2 situations, focusing on forcing play in a predictable direction, using arm positioning first, and reading the next pass to intercept.
Before you start
- Set up 2v2 groups with an attacker with a ball, a supporting attacker, and defenders.
- Position the first defender to press and show the attacker a specific direction.
Movement sequence
- Play the ball in to initiate the 2v2 scenario.
- First defender accelerates, decelerates, and positions their body to show the attacker to one side (e.g., forcing them to their right or left).
- Use arm contact first before feet contact as the player and ball move.
- Read the supporting player's movement and step in to intercept the square pass when the opportunity arises.
- Prevent forward progress and secure possession or stop the attack.
Key points
- Making play predictable: Force the player left or right to eliminate forward progress.
- Arm-first contact: Use the arm to establish body contact rather than lunging with feet.
- Interception timing: Read the next pass and step in to win the ball.
Common mistakes
Allowing a clean square pass because the defender failed to force play or close passing lanes. Trying to win the ball with the feet first instead of establishing upper body position and making play predictable.
Practice notes
Even in 2v2 or team contexts, defending boils down to individual duels where the first defender must press, show a predictable way, and look to intercept passes.
