Master Boxing Footwork with these 5 DRILLSCoaching notes
Drill 5 is an advanced angle-changing drill where the boxer throws a one-two, puts weight on the front foot, pivots and shuffles the back foot around to a new angle, delivers a body hook, and performs quick foot switches to cut angles continuously.
Before you start
- Stand with hands up, visualizing an opponent in front of the ladder square.
- Prepare to shift body weight dynamically between front and back feet.
Movement sequence
- Throw a one-two down the middle, placing your weight firmly on the front foot.
- As the rear hand returns, step the back foot around to the side while pivoting slightly on the front foot to change the angle.
- Throw a lead hook to the body from the new angle.
- Quickly shuffle by bringing the back foot forward into the square and stepping the front foot out forward.
- Throw a rear upper-cut or body shot, then repeat the shuffle and angle change to the opposite side.
Key points
- Put weight on the front foot to initiate the pivot and angle change.
- Execute the shuffle step very fast so you do not get caught off balance.
- Ensure the lead foot always stays in front of the back foot during the shuffle.
Common mistakes
Executing the shuffle step too slowly, resulting in poor balance and vulnerability. Allowing the front foot to slip behind the back foot during the shuffle step. Failing to turn the body slightly to generate power for body hooks.
Practice notes
This is an advanced drill that requires mastering slow execution first. Keep footwork lightning-fast once form is established to successfully cut angles like a professional boxer.
