5 Most Important Kick/Punch Combos For Kickboxing

Coaching notes

A fast and simple combination designed to set up the right high kick by stepping off the center line, blinding the opponent with a jab and a heavy lead hook, using a touching cross, and exploding into a high round kick.

Before you start

  • Step off the center line during your initial movement
  • Keep guard up and defense tight

Movement sequence

  1. Step in with the head off the center line and throw a jab
  2. Throw a powerful lead hook to create an opening
  3. Throw a touching or glancing cross as a blinder
  4. Immediately follow with a fast right high kick to the side of the head

Key points

  • Master the timing: the beat should be fast right after the cross (1-2-3-4 rhythm, not overly delayed)
  • Treat the cross as a light touch or blinder so the opponent closes off their guard
  • Control power on the high kick during gym sparring to avoid concussing your partner

Common mistakes

Throwing the cross with maximum knockout power instead of using it as a setup blinder Pausing too long between the cross and the high kick, allowing the opponent to recover Dropping hands during the kick execution

Practice notes

A proven formula used by elite strikers to land high kicks safely in sparring by masking the kick behind hands Can place or drag down the kick in training rather than full-force head impacts
