How to Defend in Soccer: 3 Drills to Be a Better DefenderCoaching notes
Teaches defenders how to close down attackers while managing body shape, maintaining side-on posture with weight forward, and applying smart, patient pressure.
Before you start
- Attacker dribbles side to side slowly to test the defender's adjustments.
- Defender starts opposite the attacker ready to accelerate and close down.
Movement sequence
- Play the ball in to start the live 1v1 confrontation.
- Accelerate quickly to close down distance, then decelerate into a balanced stance.
- Keep feet moving continuously while matching the attacker's side-to-side movements.
- Maintain body weight forward with one foot forward (not completely square and not completely sideways), keeping chest aimed at the ball.
- Use arm length to maintain physical reference and make upper body contact when the attacker moves.
Key points
- Body shape: Chest at the ball, one foot forward, weight on the front leg.
- Patience: Avoid diving in aggressively all at once; prioritize slowing down forward progress and making play predictable.
- Smart aggression: Accept individual battles with a smart, controlled mindset.
Common mistakes
Standing completely square, making it easy to be turned or beaten. Being overly aggressive and lunging in at the same time, allowing the attacker to easily dribble past.
Practice notes
The primary job of a defender is not always winning the ball immediately, but slowing the opponent down and making play predictable.
