Auburn’s Sprint Factory: 100m & 200m WorkoutsCoaching notes
Drive phase and transition drill focusing on powerful initial acceleration out of block starts, maintaining low drive angles, and smoothly transitioning into tall upright posture and linear max velocity mechanics.
Before you start
- Set starting blocks and cones to mark acceleration and transition zones
- Incorporate complementary short training blocks (such as 20m sled pulls followed immediately by 20m block starts)
- Ensure adequate rest intervals between acceleration sets
Movement sequence
- Assume a strong set position in the blocks with proper block spacing.
- Drive powerfully out of the blocks, pushing hard off the first steps to establish a strong acceleration angle.
- Progressively rise into a tall, linear upright posture, ensuring feet strike directly underneath the hips.
Key points
- Explosive push off the back foot and first steps out of the blocks
- Linear posture with hips staying elevated during the transition
- Foot landing directly underneath the center of mass/hip
Common mistakes
Standing up too early out of the blocks Sitting back or dropping the hips when attempting to relax or float Failing to maintain a straight, linear path through the transition zone
Practice notes
Part of the weekly sprint mechanics progression integrated alongside dynamic weight room sessions. Coaches emphasize focusing purely on body position and execution ('just think position') rather than over-racing.
